The Guangzhou Little Angels Symphony Orchestra, a talented teen orchestra from China will perform at the historic Old St. Mary’s Church, at the corner of California St. and Grant Ave. on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 3PM. This special performance will be presented by the Friends of St Mary’s School.
The Guangzhou Little Angels Symphony Orchestra was founded as the teen orchestra by the Haizhu District Palace in the spring of 1992. With more than 400 worldwide performances, the group is comprised of China’s most promising young artists between the ages of 8 and 14. The July 30th event will be their fourth US performance. The ensemble will perform Chinese and Western music on both classical and Chinese traditional instruments.
The Orchestra will self-fund all their transportation and housing costs for this event!
The Friends of St. Mary’s School will use the proceeds from this performance to fund their fight to save St. Mary’s School from extinction. To the dismay of the entire Chinese community, the school was abruptly ordered closed by the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The Chinese community helped to fund the construction of this campus, which is only one of two seismically sound school buildings that the Archdiocese has under its control.
The mission of the Friends of St. Mary’s School, a non-profit organization, is to pay for the continued operations and maintenance of the school while a more comprehensive plan is worked out between the Archdiocese and the school community. The funds will also help with the operations of the existing pre-school weekday program and the Saturday Chinese language and cultural program schools.
Dr. Collin Quock, Chairperson of St. Mary’s School Capital Campaign, notes, “St. Mary’s School has benefitted the Chinese community for the last 100 years by producing caring, strong and independent students who care about their community. This school would be sorely missed by the community if it were to be closed permanently.”
